What Would Betty White Do?

Percolate quote7-BettyWhite

Change can leave you feeling indecisive, scared, and even stressed. It’s scary to move out of your safe zone and into the unknown of doing something different. So, in comes actress Betty White. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan. Betty doesn’t know it, but anyone who hangs out with me is well aware that she’s one of my idols. To me, Betty is fearless, funny, and real. She’s a perfect example of percolating the best cup of coffee around. She inspires me with her class and humor. In times of indecision, I often ask myself WWBWD: What Would Betty White Do?

Would she choose a cup of the serious Sumatra or go for a lighter New England blend? The answer is clear and always the same: Betty would probably laugh and go light!

I love and appreciate that she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She exudes a level of confidence and courage that I constantly aspire to achieve. You’ll often hear me say: “In any time of indecision or confusion, ask yourself #WWBWD? 99.9 percent of the time you’ll have your answer.” I really do think that laughter is the best stress crusher. I strongly believe that we should just be ourselves and be hilarious doing it. By doing so, we show the world that we’re confident and comfortable being who we are. So the next time you’re feeling overly stressed, see if you can find a glimmer of humor in it, and ask yourself WWBWD. I promise you that if you just stop and ask yourself this question, nine times out of ten, you’ll laugh or have distracted yourself from the problem. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take what is happening seriously. It really just means to try to put things into perspective and keep the stress in check.

Percolate-Determination

If finding the right dress for an event puts you straight into heart palpitation mode, for example, go pick out the craziest, ugly dress you can find at the store, try it on, and have a laugh at yourself. If you get crazed every time you try to put on false eyelashes, like I do, find a few stuck to your hair during an important event once or twice in your lifetime, and have a crazy good chuckle. It’s amazing how freeing it is to be able to laugh at yourself. No longer do you worry about what others think, but instead, you gain the self-assurance to feel that you can handle anything that comes your way. Once you achieve this feeling, you gain the ability to dream big. Remember Walt Disney’s wise words: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Well, it’s true— you can! In fact, to make changes and better choices in your life, dream about them first. I say dream and keep dreaming with a dash of determination, decisiveness, and sense of humor thrown in.

Reach up and set the bar higher with everything you do. Commitment and consistency help dreams become reality. Stay the course and never give up. The journey getting to your dreams will be nothing like what you imagined. In fact, you’ll discover that what you’ve dreamed actually takes on many forms along the way. However, the most important thing is to remember to stay the course, hold steady, and embrace opportunities.

Taking the First Step
Let’s take that first step to achieving your goals. Remember, choose the lighter blend of life and stay true to yourself as you begin the voyage. I know you have the courage to do it, and you know you have it.

JOURNAL
Grab your Percolate journal and reflect on these questions:

• It’s decision time: Will your goals stay a dream, or will they become a reality?
• What factors will help you decide to make a huge change?
• Will you feel better?
• What will be mended?
• What will get broken?
• What can you live with?
• What can you live without?
• Have you evaluated the pros and cons?
• Do you feel comfortable knowing what you’re getting into?

There is one more level of courage, determination, and self-confidence that is necessary before taking that first step. It’s a leap of faith! Having the courage to change ultimately relies on the faith you have in yourself and your ability to cope with whatever arises. There are no right or wrong answers when making the decision to change; there are no guarantees that one option will ultimately be the best. That’s why a variety of choices will eventually make the process better.

We create our best change.

Be decisive

Percolate-Excellence

I hope you follow along with me each day, perhaps even consider using a journal to write your thoughts as we go.  I also would love your comments and I’m sure others would appreciate them too. In my book, Percolate – Let Your Best Self Filter Through, today and for the next several days, we are following along with The PERCOLATE Process.

I also taped a 50 minute free audio for you to listen to.  Click to listen:  Brew Your Best Life in 2015.

When we Percolate, we gradually improve ourselves and others as our message we share with the world expands.  When we are our best self, we touch the lives and hearts of others in positive, compassionate and often enlightening ways.

In speaking with people, we often use the word OK.  The word “OK” is a massive clue that something isn’t quite right. When someone says they are “OK” chances are they really aren’t. Let’s say you are hovering in what I call “the OK zone.” You aren’t all in and you aren’t all out. You are just OK.

It’s a fabulous starting point and a moment of choice, but it’s like drinking cold coffee to me. In my case, in moments or periods of time like this, I’ve needed a bolder brew. in 2004, After six years of battling food allergies, near death reactions, having anger and guilt from leaving a marriage for a new one, and moving away from family, I decided to be better than ok and that I deserved to be better than ok.

Many of us are drinking cold or burned coffee and we don’t bother to make it that best blend and savor each sip. Are you embracing your space and time and making your moments matter? It takes courage to make changes in our lives. Our habits are familiar and have become comfortable behaviors. Change takes courage because we are required to step out of the box and stir or shake things up a bit.

To allow change to brew, make room for change, or maneuver with a change you didn’t ask for, it is important to direct your thoughts in a positive direction and keep seeking what is meaningful to you.

No one can do your work for you. There are times when you wish they could. This is your own work. Make it your intention to take one action daily to make the familiar behaviors turn into something positive and meaningful.

You know change is brewing when you start to ask yourself who, what, where, when, why and how and allow yourself the time to think about it.

When we Percolate, we gradually improve ourselves and others as our message we share with the world expands.  When we are our best self, we touch the lives and hearts of others in positive, compassionate and often enlightening ways.

To begin Percolating and being our best, we must first understand that our life opens up when we shift our energy into our passions and talents that tap into our soul.  This, combined with developing and using your own set values, goals and a belief and behavior system, will support the lifestyle changes you wish to make to brew your best life. You go where you place your energy.

The 9 points which make up The PERCOLATE Process will help you ultimately “Percolate Peace,” and will help you profoundly shift your life – and – you’ll have some fun along the way.

Percolate Peace

Lifestyle changes occur when we become aware that our ability to experience peace is challenged at some level. To more easily return to a state where you feel peaceful to your core, we can make change.  Often, even a tiny change can help you change your course.  Awareness moves with us as we pay attention to the way something or someone makes us feel and we move our energy.    Let’s think about the graphic below and how our choices add or distract from our levels of peace.

Percolate Peace

Percolate-Peace

The types of choices you make in your life either add to or distract from your levels of peace.  These choices move your energy around. Some are unaware or not tuned into their energy shifts and thus not fully aware of their full potential of centered peace within. When we move too fast through our lives we might miss cues, which can bring us out of balance.  Energy is always changing.  To help you find your core of peace, think with your heart.

JOURNAL

Imagine if you started and ended each day from peace. Write about what that looks like for you.

Are you thinking with your heart?

How are you spending your energy?

What kind of choices are you making?

Does your behavior match your values?

Is it difficult for you to break from your friends and the crowd and follow your own highest, truest values and self?

Percolate Values

Percolate-Values

As we grow, change and age, we discover and create a value system.  Our lives and our value system are also dynamic and can change.  Does your behavior match your values? We usually operate somewhere on a day-to-day continuum depending on how calm and aware we are of what our inner voice says.  When we aren’t able to hear the highest self-talk, we tend to neglect our self-care and turn to external sources.  This can trigger imbalance.  When we are quiet and tune-in to ourselves and circumstances, we can bring ourselves back to core.

Here are a few examples of my personal values:

1. Practice Gratitude

2. Developing and Maintaining a practice of self-love and self-worth, where behaviors match values

3. Moments Mattering

4. Developing, mentoring and inspiring others

5. Having an abundance of integrity

6. Taking responsibility

7. Believing & Having Courage

8. Never Giving Up

9. Living to my best, highest self and potential – Being My Best You

10. Embracing aging with grace, humor and style

There are situations all throughout our lifetimes where behaviors happen around us that we don’t agree with.  It might be difficult to stand and hold your values in place, especially when you don’t want to behave in-line with a crowd or small group or even yourself for that matter.  Develop your core values and know who you and what your being can and can’t handle.  Our bodies tell us if you listen.  They tell us in the form of illness, tiredness, lack of focus, happiness, positive energy and more.  Listen to yourself.

Does your behavior match your values?

Do you know your core values?

Do you know and recognize when your body is in imbalance mode?

What do you do to bring yourself back to center?

When I opened my email this morning, I could hear joy in hearts, minds and souls. A few folks reached out to me with these thoughts:

“Ever wake up and just feel that you’re going to have am amazing day? Woke up this morning and just felt very positive, must be all the percolating I’ve been doing:)”

and

“This book has come to my life at the perfect moment as I am trying to decipher the voice inside of me that you talk about in Percolate.”

Joy is all around you.

As you walk or run around today think about your joy and intention, love, gratitude, acceptance, and more in the footprints you leave.

You go where you place your energy.

Percolate-Kindness

Let’s Percolate about kindness.

I probably don’t need to remind you to be kind.  However, you may be feeling like you want to remind someone else to be kind.  When someone is unkind to you, someone else or to something, you instantly know it.  It stings, it hurts and it can be just flat-out bothersome, particularly when you feel, perceive or are aware that the unkind behavior or comments are coming from a real intention or deliberate place or even ignorance.

Take yesterday, for example, with a review I received on Amazon.  For Percolate, there are oodles of kind, sweet and loving reviews and apparently one really nasty one. Several friends of mine drew my attention to the comment asking if I could have it removed, because they so strongly disagreed with it.  This all prompted me to poke my nose  around and look at the customer reviews for other best-selling books. I was saddened to see most had the same type of similar, hurtful remarks on their books too and some much more cruel than the one I had received.    They were unkind and uncalled for.

I had two responses:  The first was to set up my own reviewer account and give out very positive reviews to books, people and other items I think are the best and worthy of your time and attention.   This Percolates Kindness into the world and more positive, real, credible and helpful reviews.  (I urge you to do the same if you have time.)

My next response was to send love, angels,  kindness, grace and compassion to the reviewer of the nasty remark for Percolate, as the person must surely need it.

My point is that kindness starts with each one of us.

What we put out into the world, we get back in measure.

Sometimes we need a kindness reminder and wake up call.

Sometimes, unmistakably, people act kind toward us, when they could be the most mad or irritated. They overlook our mistakes, crank, negativity and so forth to help us learn and accept kindness and love by percolating kindness and grace to us in hopes we receive it and pass it on – perhaps breaking a cycle.

Kindness fosters Love, Grace and Gratitude.

Can you be kind 24/7? Maybe – Maybe Not, but generally I find most people, including myself, to be kind, mannered, graceful and so forth. We all have our moments…  interesting though, we have control over ourselves, our moments and how we behave by taking responsibility.

Kindness and Grace are the types of ways to Percolate where the behavior never gets old, cold or stale.

Goodness is timeless.

Grace is timeless.

Gentleness is timeless.

Gratitude is timeless.

Kindness is timeless.

JOURNAL

Are you kind to others?

What does kindness look like to you and how could you be more kind and loving to others?

Has anyone ever been unkind to you?  What would happen if you approached the situation with love instead of more negativity?

Is your behavior in line with your values?

Are you living a life of gratitude and awareness?

Have a conversation with yourself about kindness and write down 10-15 ways you could be more kind to yourself and others.

Ask someone this question, “What do you need and how can I be more kind to you?”

PERCOLATE
